Throughout 2024, Mountpark, supported by The National Forest and Nicholsons, has continued to enhance St. Peter’s Wood, its 53-acre biodiverse woodland in Derbyshire. Choosing to invest in land for growth, the focus of St. Peter’s Wood is to deliver measurable sustainable change while also providing a new free resource to the local community.

A major highlight of the year at St. Peter’s Wood was the introduction of 400 new shrubs throughout the woodland. With well over 30,000 new trees also now planted, many by volunteers from the local community, this outdoor classroom encourages hands-on learning for visitors of every age.

The continuation of planting onsite aims to develop the structural diversity of the forest, creating a more resilient and vibrant ecosystem. The incredible growth rate of the alder trees is a testament to the success of these efforts. Originally planted at just 40cm, these trees have now soared to over two metres tall in just three growing seasons, showcasing a remarkable fivefold increase in size.

Wild bird seed and wildflower mixes planted in 2023 continue to flourish across the site, transforming St. Peter’s Wood into a vibrant haven for wildlife. Over the summer months, visitors witnessed a colourful tapestry of wildflowers in full bloom, brought to life by the sights and sounds of a diverse array of birds, bees and insects. Frequent sightings of barn owls, kestrels, voles, skylarks, and even a pair of red-listed grey partridges highlight the thriving ecosystem. In the wetland areas, wild mallards and amber-listed teals have also been seen.

It’s been a busy year for the environmental team on site at St. Peter’s Wood with 14 acres of land and open spaces maintained and mowed throughout the growing season.  This ensured that the woodland remains managed and accessible for visitors throughout the summer months when it was bursting with colour and life.  In a move to protect the site’s growing community of wildlife, the grass between the trees was left to grow long until after the bird nesting season, minimising any potential disruption.

Ongoing ecological monitoring has revealed a remarkable uplift in on site biodiversity when compared to the site’s previous land use.  Proud to share this success, Mountpark was delighted welcome the Royal Forestry Society to tour St. Peter’s Wood this summer and see its exciting progress firsthand.

Mountpark’s commitment to St. Peter’s Wood has enhanced the area’s natural beauty and biodiversity. The woodland offers a welcoming natural environment where visitors can enhance their physical and mental wellbeing.

Whether you are curious to see Mountpark’s environmental stewardship firsthand or simply looking for a new destination for a day out, this thriving new woodland is well worth a visit.  A welcoming, enjoyable and beneficial space for all, St. Peter’s Wood is growing in success year on year.
