A community Planting Day is being held at St. Peter’s Wood in Hartshorne, Swadlincote on Saturday 18 November.

Mountpark, supported by The National Forest and Nicholsons, is inviting residents of all ages to help plant new trees at the 53-acre biodiverse woodland.

The day will include a welcome address and complimentary breakfast at 10:00am, subject to availability, followed by tree planting, woodland tours and a treasure hunt for children running until 12:30pm.

Planting Day attendees are invited to help dig and plant new fruit trees and Christmas trees, which are being introduced at St. Peter’s Wood to further enhance the woodland. Participants can also design a plaque for each tree they plant, enabling them to observe their sapling’s growth on future visits to the woodland.

Rach Clarke, development director for Mountpark commented: “St. Peter’s Wood is fast becoming a much-prized community asset with over 1,100 metres of all ability access routes open for leisure pursuits. We have handplanted almost 30,000 trees across this woodland and November’s new saplings have been selected so they can mature and be enjoyed by the community. In years to come, locals will see these trees mature and bear fruit, and we anticipate gifting rooted Christmas trees to local schools and community groups.

“This Planting Day provides the opportunity to meet the team behind St. Peter’s Wood, volunteer to help care for the woodland and, above all, have fun planting and discovering the array of tree specimens and habitats that are thriving here.”

The National Forest is on the lookout for local volunteers to be part of a community group to help care for St. Peter’s Wood. Interested parties can find out more about joining this group at the Planting Day.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own spades and wear suitable outdoor clothing and footwear for the all-weather event.

Free parking will be available at Dethick Hall on Manchester Lane, Hartshorne, Swadlincote DE11 7BE. Parent & child and disabled parking will be at the St. Peter’s Wood entrance off Slack Lane, Hartshorne.
